Help Your Kids Make Friends: Three Skills That Matter Most

Help Your Kids Make Friends

See, the point is… making friends starts with kindness, communication, and not being a prat.

So…umm. I wanna talk about kids today. This is just something that’s been on my mind lately, and I don’t want to personalise it — only share a thought.

Making friends isn’t actually difficult. But not every child is a natural “friend magnet.” Some kids need a little help, and as parents we can guide them by focusing on the skills that really matter.

And no, I’m not talking about which school they should attend or what after-school clubs they should join. I mean the lessons that actually shape how they connect with others as they grow up.

For me, it really comes down to three simple skills:

• Be nice to others.

• Communicate.

• Don’t be a prat.

Honestly, if a child learns those three things, they’ll already be ahead in life.

It’s basically a modern translation of an old principle: love your neighbour as yourself, and God above all things. Loving God gives you accountability — something greater than yourself reminding you not to act like a prat. Loving your neighbour helps you step into other people’s shoes and understand why they act the way they do.

And the outcome? Kids who grasp this early don’t just turn into “good kids.” They become the kind of people others genuinely want to be around. More social, more popular — not in a superficial way, but because kindness attracts. They’ll also be better equipped emotionally, less likely to spiral into loneliness or poor choices, and less tempted to chase validation in the wrong places or crowds.

See, the point is…Making friends isn’t difficult — but not every child is a natural friend magnet. The good news? You can help your kids by teaching them three simple skills: be nice, communicate, and don’t be a prat. See, the point is… friendship starts with kindness, empathy, and a little accountability.

That’s it.
