Love Is...

Updated: Aug 27, 2023

So… umm. Today, I want to talk about love, and I particularly love the definition the Queen Charlotte of Bridgerton gave to her son on his wedding day of what Love is. Yes, Love, you know, that word that holds immense power and has inspired countless songs, poems, and movies. But what if I told you that love goes beyond those fluttering butterflies and heart-pounding moments? What if I told you that love is more than just a fleeting feeling? What if I dared to propose that love is a decision? Brace yourself, because we’re about to embark on a journey that explores the depths of love and its true essence.

What is love, really? It’s a question that has puzzled philosophers, poets, and everyday individuals for...well, ever really. While love often begins with a rush of emotions and chemistry, those initial feelings alone do not define the true nature of love. Love is a tapestry woven from the threads of perseverance, responsibility, loyalty, and care. It is an intricate mosaic that requires effort and conscious choices to create and maintain. And Maintain. I have to reiterate, Maintain is a key word.

Imagine love as a garden. Initially, there may be an attraction, a spark that catches our attention. But as any gardener knows, a beautiful garden doesn’t flourish without nurturing and tending. Love, too, requires cultivation. It’s about making the decision to invest time and energy into understanding and supporting our loved ones, even during challenging times. It’s about standing tall in the face of adversity and weathering the storms together.

Love is not always easy. It demands responsibility and commitment. It’s a choice to be there for someone, to support their dreams and aspirations, and to be a pillar of strength when they need it most. Love is loyalty, the unwavering devotion that keeps us by someone’s side through thick and thin. It’s about valuing the connection we have and actively nurturing it, even when circumstances change.

But what about the notion of love as an obligation? It may sound strange, but bear with me. Love involves a sense of responsibility towards our loved ones. It’s a commitment we make to honor and care for them, to prioritize their well-being alongside our own. Love means going beyond our own desires and needs and considering what is best for the other person. It’s a profound act of selflessness that transforms love from a mere emotion into a lifelong journey.

See, the point is…In a world that often romanticizes love as a whirlwind of emotions, it’s essential to recognize that love is more than just fleeting feelings. It’s a decision, an ongoing choice to invest in the happiness and growth of our relationships. Love encompasses perseverance, responsibility, loyalty, care, and even a sense of obligation. It is in embracing these facets that we discover the true depth and transformative power of love. That is why I roll my eyes everytime I hear someone say I fell in love. Pfff. No one falls in love. You can fall in lust, but love is a decision. You decide. You don't fall. It's not an accident. We are not victims of our feelings, we can control our feelings. We decide who is worthy of our love.
